Welcoming Hand Mural
The facade of the St. Paul JCC in St. Paul, Minnesota had been defaced with antisemitic vandalism. Rather than simply cover up the remnants of that hateful act, they opted to replace it with a powerful and lasting statement of welcoming and partnership. This mural features the three core values of the St. Paul JCC: כָּבוֹד - kavod (respect), קְהִלָה - kehilla (community), and לדור ולדור l'dor vador (from generation to generation), spelled out in stylized Hebrew letters. The mural culminates in an outstretched hand, inviting all to be a part. Everything is constructed from squares and quadrants of various sizes in bright primary colors; these values are indeed the building blocks from which our community is constructed. I had the pleasure to play with two of my favorite things: geometry and typography. Plus, midwestern hospitality is a real thing
